The True Power of Tenderness for Highly Sensitive People

The bravest are the most tender; the loving are the daring.
— Bayard Taylor

The word sensitive is often used with negative meaning, which ironically has greater impact for the sensitive among us.

If you identify as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) then I know you understand this.

"You're too sensitive" is introjected and becomes "I'm too sensitive". As a result, the natural, biological trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS) is often a deep cause of shame for many people in Western society.

Tenderness.

Here is a different word to consider. What does the word tenderness mean to you?

To me, tenderness implies kindness above all else. It is caring, soft, yielding, warm, gentle. It is attuned, loving, understanding and compassionate.

To me, tenderness describes the best qualities of all of the beautiful and Highly Sensitive People I know or have had the pleasure to meet.

Tenderness characterises the beauty and the love HSPs have for life, nature, people and animals. Tenderness expresses wide open hearts and a willingness to engage with the fragility of life and the vulnerabilities of being human.

Yes, it hurts sometimes. But this is where the power of empathy, community and belonging emerge.

This tenderness is powerful. It speaks to Highly Sensitive People to help heal; to bring peace to the world; to engage in activism on behalf of people, animals and the environment.

Tenderness is true power, the kind that comes from within and does not coerce or force.

Tenderness is our greatest gift as Highly Sensitive People (and so is sensitivity - it's just greatly misrepresented!).
